I really liked my first author interview (with Faiz Kermani). So much so in fact, that I decided to set up a few more. I contacted a number of the authors whose books I have already reviewed on my blog, and asked them if they’d be willing to answer a few questions. You’d be surprised about the number of the positive responses I got!
So now, it is time to learn a little bit more about Marc de Bel. I’ve already reviewed a number of his books right here and I also said that he is one of my favourite writers of children’s books. I read almost all of his books when I was young, and am secretly still reading his new releases. Every Belgian young reader knows and loves him, probably almost as much as I do.
As Marc de Bel is a Dutch-speaking writer, I translated his responses to English. The original Dutch Q&A can be found below.
How do you choose the subjects you write about?
MdB: I only write about things that are close to my heart (in a positive or negative way).
Why do you write children’s books?
MdB: I think children are more interesting than adults.
Drawings are very important in children’s books, how did you choose the illustrator for your books?
MdB: Based on their talent and connection to the story.
If there is one element from your books that you could take and implement in our everyday world, what would it be?
MdB: Honesty
What is the strangest thing you’ve ever had to research for your books?
MdB: How much a soldier would pay for a prostitute during the first World War.
How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
MdB: Loving and loved writer and narrator, who likes to play soccer and rummage about in his garden.
What are three things you couldn’t live without?
MdB: Food, drinks and oxygen
What did you want to be when you were little?
MdB: A pop singer, a Red Devil [the Flemish national soccer team -Ed.] and a teacher.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
MdB: Invisibility!
What was your favourite book growing up?
MdB: Puk en Muk [by Dutch author Frans Fransen -Ed.]
What is currently your favourite book?
MdB: The dictionary
Which writers do you look up to?
MdB: Boon [Louis Paul Boon – Ed.] and Bomans [Godfried Bomans -Ed.]
If you could have dinner with any character from any book, who would it be and why?
MdB: Ule (my grandmother who passed away in 1971), because I still have so much to ask her.
When did you know that you wanted to be a writer?
MdB: After my first book.
How did you decide to stop teaching and start writing?
MdB: Out of passion and because my wife and I had 500.000 Belgian francs [a little over 12.000 € -Ed.] in savings, just enough to feed 6 mouths for a year.
Why did you want to be a writer?
MdB: Because I am a writer.
Where does your inspiration come from?
MdB: I still don’t know.
How long did it take you to finish your first book?
MdB: One summer vacation [the yearly school break in Belgium lasts two months, from July to August – Ed.]
Do you have any surprising or quirky writing habits?
MdB: No, not counting the hour of self-flagellation before starting every new chapter.
What does your writing process look like?
MdB: I work at my synopsis for months.
What is the first thing you write down when starting a new book?
MdB: The first sentence, the rest follows on its own.
What’s the most difficult part of writing a book, according to you?
MdB: Writing is pure fun, relaxation, not an effort.
How do you write?
MdB: I used to write with pen and paper. For about five years now, I write directly on the computer.
What do you prefer to write: books, movie scenarios, theatre plays, … ?
MdB: Everything.
What would you say is your biggest accomplishment ?
MdB: The hattricks I’ve scored and sometimes still score.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
MdB: Write only if there is nothing else you prefer doing.
What have you learned about yourself when you started writing?
MdB: Love is the biggest muse, Miese [his wife is named Mie -Ed.] in my case.
What is the saddest thing you’ve ever experienced with your fans?
MdB: I told stories by the deathbed of a big fan who couldn’t come to my show anymore.
What do you think of the Boekenbeurs?
MdB: They are the glory days of the year!
