I’m sure I don’t need to explain what Pottermore is to the real Potterheads out there. For everyone else, you need to visit this website if you are a Harry Potter fan. Just as Goodreads is thé social network for readers and booklovers, so is Pottermore thé social media platform for Harry Potter fans. It is constantly nourished with new information, guided by J. K. Rowling herself. It’s a real source of information and will answer a lot of your burning questions about the magical Harry Potter universe.
But that is not all, the website is also full of quizzes and tests to make you feel part of Hogwarts’ world. Most importantly, you can take a test to be sorted into one of the four Hogwarts Houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. As you can see, I’ve been sorted into Hufflepuff and I’m proud of it. I have been a Hufflepuff since I joined the first version of Pottermore way back in April 2012 under the (assigned) username BronzeShadow28077. I am happy and proud to be a Hufflepuff because I think this house matches my personality most. More information about this house can be found on Pottermore right here: All about Hufflepuff (more on Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin here).
Next, you can also be sorted into the Ilvermorny House. Ilvermorny is the American school of Witchcraft and Wizardry, so the American equivalent of Hogwarts. On Pottermore you can read all about its history and the four houses which are Horned Serpent, Pukwudgie, Thunderbird, and Wampus. I am a Thunderbird, which is said to represent the soul of the witch wizard. This house was named after the Fantastic Beast known as a Thunderbird which can, you guessed it, create storms. Bonus: this is also Rowling’s own house.
Next up is maybe the most important thing for any witch or wizard: the wand! On Pottermore, you can also answer a few questions to find out which wand will choose you. I ended up with a 10 inch elm wood wand with a Phoenix feather core. Elm wands produces the fewest accidents and the most elegant charms and spells so I’m quite happy with that. Phoenix feathers are also great since it’s the rarest core type. It takes a while to win them over, but once you have, they are capable of the greatest range of magic.
And then there is one final interesting quiz, which is a recent addition: you can now also find out what would be your Patronus. As we all know, this is the charm that repels Dementors and is based on our happiest memories. I would be an Otter, which I’m quite happy with since it’s the same as Hermione Granger. If you want more information on the Patronus Charm, read this.
So, have you already logged in to Pottermore and gotten sorted? Did you cheat and take it several times to get the House you wanted? Or did you stay true to the Harry Potter spirit and accepted your fate? Also: where you happy with what you got? And final question: did you learn anything new by browsing through the extra information? Let me know in the comments!
Happy reading,
Loes M.
