Poetry: Open A Book – Jane Baskwill

This is not the first poem by Jane Baskwill I will be reviewing on this blog. I’ve talked about Pass The Poems, Please before, way back in September of last year. Quick recap: she is an American author who writes on the one hand for educators and on the other hand for children. She wants to help teachers teach better, and at the same time, she wants to stimulate children’s imagination with poetry, picture books, and a novel.

I like this poem because of the easy rhymes and because it’s just true: opening a book means stepping into another world and discovering new things. It’s a simple poem as it’s meant for children, of course. I love the simple words, straightforward imagery and the sound and cadence of the poem. And I love the reference to reading together at the end!

Open A Book,

Open a book
And you will find
People and places of every kind;
Open a book
And you can be
Anything that you want to be;
Open a book
And you can share
Wondrous worlds you find in there;
Open a book
And I will too
You read to me
And I’ll read to you.
