The Phantom of the Opera

Something you might not know about me, is that I play music. I don’t know if I’ve talked about it before on this blog. But anyway, I do. I’m a part of a wind orchestra, for almost 20 years now. I love to play music, especially music I know and love. And to keep our audience entertained, we obviously often play popular music, especially from movies and musicals. And that is how I got to know the music of the “Phantom of the Opera” musical.

So when I went to London in 2016 with my parents, we definitely also wanted to see a musical. And the musical we chose was the “Phantom of the Opera” since both my parents also play music and love that musical. So we booked tickets to this musical in Her Majesty’s Theatre.

And I absolutely love it! The theatre itself is gorgeous and the musical was an amazing sight to behold. It has been playing there for years, and with good measure. The sets are painstakingly built and fit the theatre perfectly. I mean that chandelier. Just wow! Here’s a picture of me and my mom in the scarlet red seats and of the set before it started (taking pictures or filming during the performance is strictly forbidden and I didn’t want to be thrown out).

This is definitely my favourite musical! When I went back to London a year later with a friend, we also wanted to go see a musical. The idea was to go to the Lion King, but it was sold out, so we went to the Phantom of the Opera. Seeing it the second time was just as amazing as the first one. Only now, I could sing along to most of the songs as I’d been listening to them on repeat for the entire year. The songs are still on my regular Spotify playlist actually. I plan to go back to London at the end of next year, probably, and I will definitely go see this musical again if it’s still playing.

Or maybe I should go check out some other musicals? Since I do know the music to others like The Lion King and Wicked. I’ve seen the movie version of Les Misérables, but I’m less familiar with the music. And it’s a war story – not really my cup of tea. I would also like to see West Side Story though, I know that music very well and I’ve seen great movie versions. It wasn’t playing when I was in London, but I was looking it up and apparently it’s coming back in a new set-up in 2022. I’ll keep that in mind!

Which are your favourite musicals? Let me know!

Happy reading,

Loes M.
