I recently discovered podcasts and immediately got into a Harry Potter podcast called Potterless. So I started looking around to other podcasts as well. I was never really into audiobooks, so audio storytelling is still kind of new to me. And then I found this podcast: The Bright Sessions.
The podcast is kind of hard to describe, so I’ll use their own description:
The Bright Sessions is a science fiction podcast that follows a group of therapy patients. But these are not your typical patients – each has a unique supernatural ability. The show documents their struggles and discoveries as well as the motivations of their mysterious therapist, Dr. Bright.
So, imagine something like X-Men (called atypicals here): some people have abilities that “normal” people don’t. The general public doesn’t know about it, but of course there are secret government organisations that know. They track down the dangerous atypicals and keep them in facilities where they experiment on them. The less dangerous ones, they can go in for a short period of time and learn to control their abilities. So they know how to handle them, not hurt anyone and most important: not make their ability and the existence of atypicals known to the world. There are also therapists outside of these institutions that help atypicals deal, and one of those is Dr. Bright.
The way the story is told, is through audio-recordings from Dr. Bright’s sessions. So each episode starts with Dr. Bright setting up her audio-recording and giving a little update on where they are in their therapy and ability. And at the end of the episode, we sometimes get a little musing from her about what just happened. And slowly but surely, we realise there is much more going on with Dr. Bright herself and her patients!
It’s such an exciting show and I’m really impressed with the format of it. It had me hooked after only 2 episodes and I get really sucked into the story. I love it! I almost can’t listen fast enough. But I also wan to take the time to really understand the story and appreciate what’s going on. So I’ve limited myself to only listening while I’m walking (combining this amazing story and some healthy exercise). Can’t wait to see what’s going to happen!
If you like X-Men, conspiracies, everything superhero or even supernatural, … this is the podcast for you! And the voices are different enough that it’s easy to follow along with who’s talking and how it’s progressing. (which is something I feared at first, when I was just getting into podcasts)
Happy listening,
Loes M.
