New releases: June 2016 – nonfiction

Post 68

I don’t read a lot of non fiction, but I do once in a while as an antidote to all the young adult and fantasy that I normally read. I enjoy For Dummies books, biographies and explanatory stories about the creation of companies and the invention of products. So let’s dive into the new June releases in non fiction.

  1. Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War by Mary Roach
    Publication date: June 7th 2016
Best-selling author Mary Roach explores the science of keeping human beings intact, awake, sane, uninfected, and uninfested in the bizarre and extreme circumstances of war. Grunt tackles the science behind some of a soldier’s most challenging adversaries—panic, exhaustion, heat, noise—and introduces us to the scientists who seek to conquer them.
  2. The Inevitable: Understanding the 12 Technological Forces That Will Shape Our Future by Kevin Kelly
    Publication date: June 7th 2016
From one of our leading technology thinkers and writers, a guide through the twelve technological imperatives that will shape the next thirty years and transform our lives. Kelly’s bright, hopeful book will be indispensable to anyone who seeks guidance on where their business, industry, or life is heading—what to invent, where to work, in what to invest, how to better reach customers, and what to begin to put into place—as this new world emerges.
  3. This Is Where You Belong: The Art and Science of Loving the Place You Live by Melody Warnick
    Publication date: June 21st 2016
In the spirit of Gretchen Rubin’s megaseller The Happiness Project and Eric Weiner’s The Geography of Bliss, a journalist embarks on a project to discover what it takes to love where you live. What she learns is good news for anyone who’s ever felt stuck in a not-perfect place: You don’t have to be in your dream city to have a great life. You just have to love the place you’re in to be healthier, happier, more socially connected, and more resilient.
  4. But What If We’re Wrong? Thinking About the Present As If It Were the Past by Chuck Klosterman
    Publication date: June 7th 2016
Kinetically slingshotting through a broad spectrum of objective and subjective problems, But What If We’re Wrong? is built on interviews with a variety of creative thinkers—George Saunders, David Byrne, Jonathan Lethem, Kathryn Schulz, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Brian Greene, Junot Díaz, Amanda Petrusich, Ryan Adams, Nick Bostrom, Dan Carlin, and Richard Linklater, among others—interwoven with the type of high-wire humor and nontraditional analysis only Klosterman would dare to attempt. It’s a seemingly impossible achievement: a book about the things we cannot know, explained as if we did. It’s about how we live now, once “now” has become “then.”
  5. Ego Is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday Publication date: June 14th 2016
“While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive, visionary geniuses who remade the world in their image with sheer, almost irrational force, I’ve found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition.” – from the Prologue
