New releases: October 2016 – fantasy

post-122

Third Wednesday of the month, that means it’s time to look at Goodreads’ top 5 of new releases in fantasy! The covers look quite alluring but I must admit that I didn’t look far beyond book number 4. That title! I mean, it sounds ludicrous and awesome at the same time, which the short description only confirmed. The description of book 1 also sounds promising: Mexico, vampires and gang wars. And book number 3 also intrigues me, it’s a collection of modern retellings of fairy tales by some of the best Science fiction and Fantasy authors out there. Let’s dive right in:

  1. Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
    Publication date: October 25th 2016
Welcome to Mexico City… An Oasis In A Sea Of Vampires… Domingo, a lonely garbage-collecting street kid, is busy eking out a living when a jaded vampire on the run swoops into his life. Atl, the descendant of Aztec blood drinkers, must feast on the young to survive and Domingo looks especially tasty. Smart, beautiful, and dangerous, Atl needs to escape to South America, far from the rival narco-vampire clan pursuing her. Little by little, Atl finds herself warming up to the scrappy young man and his effervescent charm. And then there’s Ana, a cop who suddenly finds herself following a trail of corpses and winds up smack in the middle of vampire gang rivalries. Vampires, humans, cops, and gangsters collide in the dark streets of Mexico City. Do Atl and Domingo even stand a chance of making it out alive?
  2. Lost Gods: A Novel by Brom

But an ancient evil is looming, and what seems like a safe haven may not be all it appears . . . With Lost Gods, Brom’s gritty and visceral prose takes us on a haunting, harrowing journey into the depths of the underworld. My verdict?

  1. Meh – doesn’t sound like something I’d enjoy reading
  2. Reminds me of Dante and ancient mythology – not right now, but does sound promising
  3. Just one word: yes!
  4. This looks to be so bad it’s good – yes!
  5. A little too complicated and far-fetched for me

So obviously, 3 and 4 have ended up on my to read lists. How about you? Do you agree with my verdict? Let me know in the comments!

Happy reading as always,

Loes M.
